Astigmatism
People with abnormally bulging corneas not only see distant objects out of focus, but near objects too. Because the cornea focuses the horizontal rays differently from the vertical rays, points are so distorted that they appear as bars. Optical lenses should counteract this but to do so they must be placed in a particular exact position in front of the eye. Besides the negative or positive diopter value of the cylinder, the position of the axis, in degrees, is also given, for example: Cyl. -1.5 dpt, Axis 0.
LASIK can correct excurvation of the cornea to approx. 4 dpt.*
